LAST Critique of Charleston Daily Mail Sports

WVU’s football team fought a hard battle against TCU and any story that comes from that game is newsworthy enough to be on the front page of the Charleston Daily Mail. That story makes the entire front page and the entire section because it will get, even Marshall fans, to read what’s inside. The headline, however, has too much space and even though it seems to be a daily mail habit, it still does not fit the layout well from a readers’ point of view. This section is different because there are more wire stories than usual and one of the stories does not have a byline. There are no grammar mistakes that I have found this week. The stories are filled with quality information and they are definitely of the public interest.

Charleston Daily Mail Sports October 28

This is the first section I found a grammar mistake and it was on the front page. Although it was minor, most people would catch it if they read that particular story. The writer put the word “an’ when it should have been “and.” Marshall football takes the front page acceptably since the story is very newsworthy to the sports readers around this area. There is a not a lot of copy and the stories seem shorter than usual. The cutlines are visible as well as the pictures. Surprisingly, the headlines do not leave much space, which is different than the past. The headline for the big story could be bigger to show how newsworthy it is. I found another punctuation mistake on the second page where there should be a comma. The headlines on the second page do not fit the layout well. There could have been more done to make the headlines fit with the copy and the pictures better to make it more readable. 

Charleston Daily Mail Sports October 21

There are multiple quotes in this week’s section that are unnecessary because they could easily be paraphrased. One quote from Doc Holliday goes with what the headline title is and that is the only one that seems acceptable in that story. Another quote “I don’t think we’re going to have to convince our kids that these guys can play,” does not tell the reader much and will not make sense to the reader. Overall this section is laid out well as far as newsworthiness goes. There are big news stories on the front page and stories about high school sports on the inside. However, the big headline story does not have a big enough headline. It is hard to tell what the big story is here. The pictures have great quality and really tell a different side or a more visual side to the stories that the writers are telling.

Charleston Daily Mail Sports Section Critique October 14

I have noticed Marshall University football is starting to become more popular in this newspaper’s sports section. The Herd is doing well and has continued the same winning streak, are the games really that newsworthy at this point? Like I have previously mentioned, the headlines have extra, unnecessary space. There is a lot of copy on the front page but the stories have good, informative quality. The pictures are clear and printed nicely like they usually are. The whole inside of the second and third page seem crammed and there needs to be more space between each line of the copy. Straining the readers’ eyes is not something that is going to make them keep want to keep reading.
